Sri Lanka – 33 endemic bird species and one of the best places to see Leopard.

33 endemic bird species and one of the best places in the world to see Leopard. Sri Lanka is a very exciting destination for birdlovers and naturalists, with plenty of different habitats and species within short distances. Few countries in the world offer such a lot of magical experiences in such a small space. Wether it comes to birds, mammals, food or culture, you get a lot of value for your money here.

Have a look at one of our trip reports!

Among the top attractions on the tour are of course the many endemic birds, like Serendib Scops Owl, Sri Lanka Frogmouth, Sri Lanka Scaly Thrush, Sri Lanka Blue Magpie, Sri Lanka Grey Hornbill, Sri Lanka Hanging Parrot, Sri Lanka Green Pigeon, Sri Lanka Whistling Thrush, to mention but a few.

We also have good chances of several Owls, including Brown Hawk Owl, Collared Scops Owl, Brown Fish Owl, Jungle Owlet, Sri Lanka Bay Owl, Brown Wood Owl and Barn Owl.

Other photogenic birds we will aim to see on the trip are Pheasant-tailed Jacana, Asian Paradise Flycatcher, Forest Wagtail, Red-faced Malkoha, Indian Pitta, Orange-headed Ground Thrush, etc. Among Woodpeckers Greater Flameback, Lesser Yellownape, Brown-capped Pygmy Woodpecker, Rufous Woodpecker and White-naped Woodpecker are all on the menue. There will also be several Birds of Prey, for instance several species of Eagles. Among more familiar species we know from the European birdbook, Oriental Honey Buzzard, Hoopoes, egrets, a lot of Waders as well as chance of plenty of siberian/ asiatic migrants.

The Leopard is of course the major attraction among mammals of Sri Lanka. There will also be Indian Elephants, several species of Deer, monkeys, mungos, squirrels, like for instance Grizzled Giant Squirrel. Crokodiles, snakes, lizards and beautiful butterflies.

This tour is a birdwatching tour focused on seeing as many of Sri Lankas unique bird species as possible. There will be a lot of good photo opportunities and if you like mammals too this is certainly a trip for you. We usually start early and be active most of the light hours of the day, some evenings we head out to look for nocturnal birds and animals.

We will visit an array of different habitats from humid rainforest, coastal wetlands and shores to upland grassy, high plateaus.

We have a local birdguide on the whole tour who will also meet us at the airport. In some places we have extra local birdguides as well, knowledgeable in the local bird specialities.

A majority of the nights we stay in lodges and hotels close to or even surrounded by nature. They are often made for nature tourism so they serve our purpose perfectly. They are all of good standard with en-suite facilities and a.c. in the rooms. The food in Sri Lanka is colourful and full of flavor. Indian-related, sometimes spicy but always varied with several dishes every meal. Rice and curry is the most frequent dish, with plenty of vegetables, chicken and beef are often on the table as well. Beer and wine is usually served on the lodges. Most hotels have wi-fi but usually just in the lobby and common spaces.

We travel in a comfortable minivan during most of the tour but on a few excursions we swap to 4×4 jeeps. The pace of the tour can be described as medium level with several early mornings but no longer or strenuous walks. The short walks we do are mostly on trails and tracks in the habitat. A few bus transfers are longer, up to 4 hours. We visit several of Sri Lankas most well-known National parks such as Horton Plains, Mahakandarawa Rainforest, Yala, and more.

To visit Sri Lanka during the winter months have several advantages. It´s normally the dry season (even if it can rain some days too) and temperatures are warm and pleasent, (between +20-30° c) so not too hot. On higher elevation and especially early mornings it can be cooler down to around +10° c. November is considered a favorable time to visit Sri Lanka as it marks the beginning of the dry season in many regions. Many Siberian/ Asiatic migrant birds are here, adding to the diversity.
